My goals: Personal and Charitable

In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal
to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it. (Robert Heinlein)

I’m guessing that some folks might wonder why I decided to do this “half-marathon thing”. This started as a personal goal to get fit. I’m not naturally an active person — I prefer sitting in front of my computer and messing around on the interwebs or cooking/baking in my kitchen. But … face it … I am NOT getting any younger and I need to take better care of myself. So I decided to look around and see what I could do that I could actually commit to.

There’s the key word for me: Commit. I am really lousy at keeping to a commitment that I only make to myself. Sad but true. I bail at things at the drop of a hat, if I haven’t really committed to a person or group. So with Team Challenge keeping me motivated and me knowing that I have formally committed to raising money and completing a half-marathon, I know I’ll do it.

Charity. I’ve never given much though to charity. I’ve tried volunteering over the years, but see the above paragraph: BAILER! Cleaning up riverbanks, working in libraries … anything like that is not my style (though I’ve tried). I donate money to good causes but never really thought about “being charitable”. The whole fundraising aspect of this challenge is really opening my eyes. Possibly my heart, too. 😉 Finding out that people I know have a terrible disease that is currently incurable just makes me sit up and take notice. So I’m getting over my inherent fear of rejection and soliciting for donations left and right. I figure, it never hurts to ask.

And on that note … here’s a link to my fundraising page 😉 … go check it out!
