Restaurant Reflections: Saffron Indian Bistro (San Carlos, CA)

Fork rating: 4 forks

Anyone who’s known me for a long time knows I never really fell in love with Indian food. It was just “OK” and something I ate when Craig had a hankering. That was until we found Saffron Indian Bistro in our neighborhood. What a local gem!

It was just by chance that we went into Saffron. We normally went to place around the block, which was marginal at best (that place had already changed hands 2, maybe 3 times since we’d been going there). It was lunchtime and I told Craig “We should try this.” He was at first reluctant, but now we’re big fans.

Every day at lunch (and on Tuesday and Sunday nights), Saffron has a buffet. It is chock full of all sorts of dishes, such as our favorites: butter chicken, mushroom marsala, lamb curry, samosas. To the detriment of my waistline, a buffet means going back more than once. It’s so worth it, though! The food is delicious and plentiful.

We’ve also gone when it’s just ordering off the menu. We eat family style, so we order a number of dishes and share. There’s always enough to take home for a lunch later.

Craig likes the desserts a lot, but I’m not fond of rose water, so I tend to skip it. Note that this is one of the few times I will skip dessert!!

The wait staff is attentive and the pricing pretty reasonable. We’ve never had to make any reservations, but sometimes at lunch during the week, the place gets crowded. We have used them for home delivery and the food is just as good (but then I have to do the dishes!).
